Foundation Verse: Genesis 1:26-28 (AMPC)
LESSON COMPOSITION
Most believers approach money from the wrong starting point. They come to God hoping He might decide to bless them, carrying a quiet suspicion that poverty is more spiritual than wealth. Genesis 1 settles that before the conversation starts: God created abundance first. Gold in Eden, precious stones, fertile ground with seed already in it, multiplication built into every living thing. Poverty is not original. Scarcity is not His design. Lack is the counterfeit, not the standard.
This lesson lays the foundation everything else in the course builds on. Genesis 1:26-28 reveals who you are (made in His image, carrying His nature and creative authority), what He did before He ever gave you an assignment (He blessed you first), and what He commanded as the operating pattern for human life (fruitfulness, multiplication, subduing, dominion). The seven insights below walk this out from the text. The verse-by-verse breakdown walks through every key Hebrew term: tselem (image), barak (blessing), radah (dominion), kabash (subdue), parah and rabah (fruitful and multiply). The ancient Near Eastern background on tselem as the king’s authorized representative in conquered territory opens up what it really means to carry God’s image in the financial realm.
The Father went ahead of this. He designed abundance before sin entered and never changed His mind about it. Through Christ, the last Adam, every part of the Genesis mandate is restored: image, blessing, fruitfulness, multiplication, subduing, and dominion. PART 1: FOUNDATION VERSE – THE GENESIS MANDATE
FOUNDATION VERSE
“God said, Let Us [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness, and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the [tame] beasts, and over all of the earth, and over everything that creeps upon the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them. And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man]; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28, AMPC) [GEN-1-26]
Insights from the Verse
Insight 1: God did not create man and then hope for the best. He created man in His own image and likeness, which means man was built with God’s nature, God’s capacity, and God’s creative authority. You are not an accident functioning in a system designed for others. You were built to operate the way God operates.
Insight 2: The blessing came before the assignment. Notice the order: “God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful…” God blessed first, commanded second. The capacity to fulfill the dominion assignment came from the blessing, not from human effort. Empowerment precedes expectation.
Insight 3: “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it” are not suggestions. They are commands built into the original mandate. Fruitfulness is not optional for humanity. Multiplication is not an upgrade. It is the factory setting.
Insight 4: “Using all its vast resources in the service of God and man.” The AMPC text makes explicit what is implied in the Hebrew. Subdue means to bring earth’s resources under ordered management for Kingdom purposes. The resources were always there. Man was created to activate them.
Insight 5: God ended this mandate with the word “dominion,” radah, a kingly ruling authority. Man was not placed on the earth as a subject of earthly circumstances. Man was placed here as creation’s administrator, holding delegated authority from the King.
Insight 6: Gold existed in Eden before the fall. Genesis 2:11-12 records it: “The first is the Pishon; it flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. The gold of that land is of high quality; bdellium [pearl?] and onyx stone are there.” (AMPC) [GEN-2-11] Precious metals and valuable resources were part of original creation, not compensation for hardship, not a temptation planted by evil, but part of God’s good design.
Insight 7: God established a permanent economic law after the flood that has never been revoked: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22, AMPC) [GEN-8-22] The seed-and-harvest pattern is built into creation as an irrevocable covenant. It applies to money, to giving, to work, to investment, to every form of planting.

Genesis 1:26 – “Let Us make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness”
This is the announcement of man’s design. Three persons of the Godhead deliberate together about what man will be. The conclusion is image and likeness, not similar to God in some distant theological sense, but carrying His actual functional nature. The word for image, tselem, in ancient Near Eastern culture referred to a king’s representative placed in a conquered territory: not just a portrait of the king, but a functional agent of the king’s authority. When God made man in His tselem, He was establishing man as His legal representative on earth, carrying His nature and His authority to act on His behalf.
Historical Context Treasure: The King’s Image in the Ancient Near East
In the ancient Near East, when a king conquered territory, he placed a tselem (image-statue) of himself in that land. The image was not decorative. It carried legal force: the king’s authority was present wherever his image stood. Tribute was paid to the image. Oaths were sworn before it. To deface the king’s image was treason. When Genesis says God made man in His tselem, it is using language every ancient reader would have recognized as a legal appointment: you are the authorized representative of the Creator-King, placed in His territory, carrying His authority, acting on His behalf. That is your job description in the financial realm.
Genesis 1:27 – “Male and female He created them”
The mandate is given to humanity, not to a spiritual elite, not to a special class, not to those who earn it through religious performance. Both male and female carry the image, the likeness, the blessing, and the dominion authority. The inheritance is for all who bear His image.
Genesis 1:28a – “God blessed them”
Before God gave any command, He blessed them. This sequence is not accidental. The blessing is the empowerment: the supernatural capacity to succeed in what God is about to assign. You cannot fulfill a Genesis mandate without a Genesis blessing. God never gives an assignment without first giving the ability to complete it.
Genesis 1:28b – “Be fruitful and multiply”
These two words establish God’s intention for increase. Parah (be fruitful) means productive growth that yields results. Rabah (multiply) means exponential increase, not addition but multiplication. God designed human life to generate results, compound over time, and grow beyond its starting point. This applies to finances. Your income should grow. Your assets should compound. Your giving should yield multiplied return. These are not prosperity gospel additions. They are built into the original creation design.
Genesis 1:28c – “Fill the earth and subdue it”
Kabash (subdue) is an aggressive word. It means to conquer, to bring under control, to force into submission. Resources resist. Money does not automatically flow to you. Business does not automatically succeed. Earth’s potential must be developed through wisdom, work, and spiritual authority. Subduing requires both the spiritual and the practical: declaration and labor, prayer and skill, authority and application.
Genesis 1:28d – “Have dominion”
Radah (dominion) means to rule, to reign, to govern. It is the authority of a king over his territory. God gave this ruling authority to humanity, not just authority over fish and birds, but authority over creation’s resources, including financial circumstances. You were not designed to be mastered by money. You were designed to master it, to govern it, to direct it in alignment with God’s purposes.
