The Blessing Came First

Look at the exact sequence in Genesis 1:28. God blessed them — and THEN said, Be fruitful. Empowerment precedes expectation. He did not give an assignment and then wish them luck. He blessed first, and the blessing was the capacity to fulfill everything He was about to ask.

The Hebrew word for blessed here is barak (Strong’s H1288). Its root meaning is to kneel — the posture of receiving empowerment from a superior, and by extension, the empowerment itself. When God blesses, He is not making a wish. He is transferring supernatural capacity for success. Ancient blessings functioned as legal grants of authority and resource. Barak includes prosperity, health, protection, favor, and increase — not as separate gifts but as one comprehensive empowerment. The blessing is the mechanism by which covenant rights become operative in your life.

“And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man].” (Genesis 1:28, AMPC)

The blessing is the empowerment, not the reward. You are not working your way toward it. You were born into it through your covenant relationship with God. Paul confirms this in Galatians 3:13-14 — Christ purchased our freedom from the curse so that the blessing promised to Abraham might come upon us through faith. The full Genesis blessing was bought at the cross. It belongs to you now. Stop asking for it and start operating from it.

Made in the Image of an Abundant God

Genesis 1:26 opens with a deliberate announcement: “Let Us make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness.” Three persons of the Godhead deliberate together about what man will be. The conclusion is image and likeness — not similar to God in some distant theological sense, but carrying His actual functional nature.

Tselem (Strong’s H6754) — the Hebrew word translated image — carried enormous weight in the ancient Near Eastern world. A tselem was not merely a portrait. In ancient royal culture, kings placed images of themselves in conquered territories to signify ongoing authority. The tselem was a functional representative, carrying the nature, capacity, and authority of the king it represented. When God made man in His tselem, He was establishing man as His legal representative on earth, carrying His nature and His authority to act on His behalf. You are not an accident functioning in a system designed for others. You were built to operate the way God operates — and the God you represent lacks nothing.

This is why poverty is not original. Scarcity is not God’s design. You are made in the image of a God who lacks nothing, which means lack is a lie about your identity. Every time poverty tries to define you, you have grounds to reject it — not because you are denying reality but because you know whose image you carry.

Fruitful, Multiply, Subdue, Reign

The four verbs of Genesis 1:28 are commands, not suggestions. Be fruitful (parah, H6509): productive growth that yields results — designed-in fruitfulness, not accident or luck. Multiply (rabah, H7235): exponential increase, not addition but multiplication. One becomes many. Little becomes much. God designed human life to generate results, compound over time, and grow beyond its starting point. Your income should grow. Your assets should compound. Your giving should yield multiplied return. These are not prosperity-gospel additions. They are built into the original creation design.

Notice what subdue implies. Kabash (H3533) is an aggressive word — to conquer, to bring under control, to force into submission. Earth’s potential resists. Money does not automatically flow to you. Business does not automatically succeed. Debt does not automatically dissolve. Resources must be actively developed through wisdom, work, and spiritual authority. Subduing has two fronts: spiritual (declaration, prayer, exercising authority over the spirit of poverty) and practical (learning what you need to learn, working faithfully, applying biblical money principles consistently). You are not subduing in your own capacity — Christ’s strength is infused into you for this. Philippians 4:13 says you are “ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength” into you.

And dominion: radah (H7287), the authority of a king over his territory. You were not placed on earth as a subject of financial circumstances. You were placed here as creation’s administrator, holding delegated authority from the King. Psalm 8:6 confirms it: God made man “to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet” (AMPC). When things are under your feet, you govern them. They do not govern you. This includes your financial situation. You were not designed to be mastered by money. You were designed to master it — to direct it in alignment with God’s purposes.

The Irrevocable Covenant: Seedtime and Harvest

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22, AMPC)

After the flood, God built a permanent economic law into creation and declared it irrevocable. The seedtime-and-harvest pattern applies to money, to giving, to work, to investment — to every form of planting. This is not contingent on the economy. It is not tied to the government or the stock market or the conditions you were born into. It is a covenant God established with the earth itself, and it has never been revoked.

Paul pulls this into full view in 2 Corinthians 9: he who sows generously will also reap generously. God provides seed for the sower, multiplies the resources for sowing, and increases the fruits of righteousness — “so that you can be generous” (AMPC). The multiplication loop runs perpetually. You plant, God multiplies, you give more, He multiplies more. This is not a transaction. It is a way of life built into the covenant.

This Blessing Was Purchased for You

Someone may ask: does this still apply to me? The fall disrupted the original design. Has the blessing been cancelled or narrowed? Not even slightly. Read what Christ did.

“Christ purchased our freedom [redeeming us] from the curse (doom) of the Law [and its condemnation] by [Himself] becoming a curse for us, for it is written [in the Scriptures], Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree (is crucified); To the end that through [their receiving] Christ Jesus, the blessing [promised] to Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, so that we through faith might [all] receive [the realization of] the promise of the [Holy] Spirit.” (Galatians 3:13-14, AMPC)

“May blessing (praise, laudation, and eulogy) be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm!” (Ephesians 1:3, AMPC)

The blessing is not future and conditional. It is present and legal, purchased at the cross and activated through faith. “Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm” — every. Not some. Not the ones you earned. Not the ones for the especially holy. Every blessing, including the Genesis blessing of fruitfulness, multiplication, dominion, and supernatural empowerment for success. You received it when you received Christ. You are not working toward it. You are already standing in it.

Three Things You May Already Be Thinking

“Poverty seems more spiritual. Isn’t wealth dangerous?” This conclusion comes from a misreading of Scripture, not from Scripture itself. Jesus warned against the love of money — not the possession of it. The patriarchs were wealthy men: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. David was a king with vast resources. Solomon’s prosperity was God’s direct gift. Job, after his trial, received twice what he had before. The New Covenant does not narrow what the Old Covenant established — it expands it. The Abrahamic blessing, fully purchased by Christ, carries “abundant increase of favors.” Wealth does not corrupt those whose hearts are anchored in the Kingdom and whose hands are open to give. It is meant to flow through you for purposes that outlast you.

“I have believed for financial increase and nothing has changed. Maybe the blessing isn’t for me.” Duration does not indicate refusal from God. The seedtime-and-harvest law is irrevocable — but harvest has a timing. Jesus said in Mark 4 that after you plant, the earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. You are not waiting on God’s willingness. You are in a harvest process He has already set in motion. Keep planting. Keep declaring. Keep working in faith. The law is working even when you cannot see the blade yet.

“I’m a new believer. This feels too big.” This is exactly where you should begin. The Genesis mandate is not a graduate-level truth for advanced believers. It is the foundation — the first thing God established and the context for everything else in Scripture about finances. Starting here means you do not have to unlearn years of poverty theology before you can stand on the truth. You get to build your entire financial life on the original design. That is a gift.
